Jinx was my first Alaskan malamute and Easter present in 1999. We located his litter of puppies through the newspaper. My husband and I drove out to Sandy to look at two litters. I liked a different puppy, who seemed more outgoing and social. We brought home the puppy my husband preferred, who was timid and less gregarious…at least that was what we thought he was!
At home we soon found our shy puppy had only been shy because he hadn’t been feeling well. The next few days we spend a lot of time cleaning up runny messes in the house. This marked the beginning or our adventure with Alaskan malamutes, and their sock and underwear eating.
We raised Jinx and Bear through puppyhood and partway through their adolescence together. Around a year and a half old we realized we could no longer keep both dogs. Bear and Jinx both wanted the Alpha position. This resulted in multiple fights between the two dogs. During one fight my husband had tried to break them apart and ended up being bitten. Eventually, we decided one had to go- it was best for both of them. I made my husband make the decision because I LOVED both of my dogs and I could not decide. He chose to keep Jinx and eventually gave away Bear.
We lost Jinx unexpectedly due to a condition called “bloat”. We were unaware of this deadly condition. We have provided information about “bloat” on the links page.
